Mildronate is an anti-ischemic agent that is used in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders such as angina and heart failure. There are also other applications. Meldonium inhibits the biosynthesis of carnitine, and thus the degradation of fatty acids. This toxic intermediates are less formed and it will consume less oxygen. Meldonium is admitted in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union (Mildronate®). It can be abused as a doping agent and is therefore since 1 January 2016 by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited for professional sport.
Mildronate is mainly in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union in the form of capsules and as an injection preparation in the trade, for example, in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Latvia (
Mildronate® ). In Switzerland, the EU and the USA, it is however not registered. Developed Meldonium in the 1970s Ivars Calvin at the Institute of Organic Synthesis in Latvia.
